JOB TITLE: Direct Services Advocate

POSITION SUMMARY:  The Direct Services Advocate will provide crisis intervention and advocacy to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and/or stalking.

Salary (depending upon qualifications): $37,000-$40,000 depending on experience, plus benefits  

General Schedule: This is a full time, salaried position

Key Duties and Functions include, but are not limited to:

  1. Provide initial crisis response to clients who contact the agency by phone, walk-in or by other methods during regular business hours.
  2. Provide crisis intervention and empowerment-based, trauma-informed advocacy to clients seeking emergency services:
    1. Conduct intakes and staff clients’ cases with social work team as necessary;
    2. Provide information and education to help clients understand the dynamics of domestic violence
    3. Work with supervisor to provide emergency crisis counseling, financial and material assistance, and other necessary services to clients seeking emergency assistance;
    4. Assess clients’ safety and formulate safety plans using knowledge of local resources for DV, SA, and stalking to make referrals, as appropriate
    5. Assist clients in securing safe shelter, and permanent housing;
    6. Report all suspected incidents of child abuse/neglect to CPS, and suspected incidents of adult exploitation and/or abuse to APS.
    7. Provide information and referrals to community service providers.
    8. Assist client in making relocation plans when necessary.
  3. Document all services provided, maintaining accurate and detailed records and work logs.  Utilize web-based case management data base to document client enrollment and services received.
  4. Cover the 24-hour crisis line on some weekends and evenings as necessary and serve as staff back-up for crisis line volunteer advocates on rotating evenings and weekends.
  5. Serve as a liaison between Friendship Center and law enforcement agencies and facilitate crime interviews/reports with law enforcement representatives.
  6. Make daily contact with victims of crime using data provided by law enforcement personnel and maintain records of crime victim contacts.
  7. Be present with a client while they are receiving medical attention and/or forensic exam for injuries as a result of a crime.
  8. Be present with clients in court hearings, CPS meetings, etc.
  9. Attend specialized trainings as needed.
  10. Provide Order of Protection assistance to our clients, as needed
  11. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned (may include but are not limited to: grant writing, program development/implementation, volunteer coordination, database management, group classes, website updating, etc.)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required:

  1. BA or BS Degree in human services, psychology, social work, women’s studies, or other related fields
  2. Training and/or experience in the dynamics of domestic and sexual violence is strongly preferred.
  3. Ability to problem-solve, manage time and work independently under pressure
  4. Ability to function as an effective member of a professional team
  5. Positive attitude and professional demeanor and image
  6. Ability to set personal and professional boundaries
  7. Ability to completely understand and maintain strict adherence to confidentiality, safety procedures, and advocate privilege
  8. Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to listen well
  9. Ability to balance emotional and physical needs with work demand through personal and effective forms of self-care
  10. Ability to work with a wide variety of ethnic, racial, socioeconomic, and religious individuals and/or groups.
  11. Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with other community-based services and systems professionals.
  12. Demonstrate a willingness to improve professional skills through training.
  13. Ability to set goals and complete projects in a timely manner.
  14. Ability to work both independently and in small team settings. Comfortable taking initiative but also committed to sharing information and working well in a team.


Special Work Requirements:

  • Prior to employment, you will be required to pass a background check
  • This position will report to the Client Care Director but will also check in regularly and work closely with the Senior Crisis Response Advocate
  • Must have own transportation, valid driver’s license, and current driver’s insurance
